Online payments in Bangladesh: bKash, Nagad, SSLCommerz or all three?

Which payment options your customers actually expect, how gateways compare on fees and settlement, and the setup we recommend for most online stores.

Ask any shop owner in Dhaka why a customer abandoned their cart and the answer is often the same: the payment option they wanted was not there. Getting payments right is the single biggest conversion lever most Bangladeshi online stores have.

What customers expect at checkout

Most buyers want to pay the way they already pay every day. For many that means a mobile wallet. Others still prefer cash on delivery, and a growing group pays by card. A store that offers only one of these leaves money on the table.

  • Mobile wallets (bKash, Nagad, Rocket) for quick, familiar payments.
  • Cards and internet banking through an aggregator such as SSLCommerz or aamarPay.
  • Cash on delivery for first-time buyers who do not trust a new store yet.

Direct wallet integration vs an aggregator

An aggregator gives you cards, banking and several wallets through one integration and one settlement report. Integrating bKash or Nagad directly usually gives a smoother in-app flow and sometimes lower fees, but each one is a separate contract and a separate integration to maintain.

Our rule of thumb: start with one aggregator plus your customers’ favourite wallet integrated directly. Add the rest when the numbers justify it.

Details that quietly cost sales

  • A checkout that redirects to an unfamiliar page without any branding.
  • No clear message when a payment fails, so customers pay twice or give up.
  • Orders marked as paid before the gateway confirms the transaction.
  • Refunds that have to be handled by hand in a spreadsheet.

Our recommendation

For a typical store we set up an aggregator for cards and banking, a direct bKash checkout, cash on delivery with phone verification for new customers, and automatic order status updates from each gateway. That combination covers almost every buyer without making the checkout complicated.
